Virgin Mobile Promo: $60 Plan with 10GB Data in BC, Alberta, Ontario [u]

Update: Virgin now offers the $60/10GB plan in Alberta, BC and Ontario. This article has been updated to reflect the change. The 10GB data is permanent. Call in and make the change–there are long wait times right now.

====

Is this considered a full-fledged wireless price war yet? Virgin Mobile is currently offering a $55 BYOD plan with 10GB of data (3GB + 7GB bonus), for today only. After one year, this plan will jump to $65 per month for 10GB of data, which will remain.

Virgin Mobile appears to be offering this $55/10GB today, as the $60/10GB plan we’re seeing from Rogers/Fido (BC, AB only), Bell (BC, AB only), and Koodo (BC, AB, ON only) isn’t in their systems yet. Telus will launch this promo plan tomorrow.

We’re told by retail employees they “don’t know” when the $60/10GB plan will launch, as they can only “speak about today”. But one employee said the Virgin $60/10GB plan will launch on Saturday, December 16 for Ontario.

Virgin Mobile’s $55/10GB one-day offer appears to be a response to Telus’ Koodo Mobile, as the latter launched their $60/10GB promo in Ontario today, putting a kink in Rogers/Fido’s plan which is an Alberta/BC exclusive.

This $55/10GB plan is a warm deal, since it will jump to $65 per month after one year, unlike Koodo’s offer which is $60/10GB permanently. These plans include unlimited Canada-wide calling and text messaging.

All of this is to compete with Freedom Mobile out west and their new LTE network, as Shaw’s wireless carrier launched a $60/10GB plan back in October, as part of revamped ‘Big Gig’ plans, which can now pair with iPhone sales.

Not really and $55 plan. $65 plan with a $10 12 month discount. And I think it’s a 3 GB plan with 7GB bonus for 2 years.

are you 100% sure the 7GB bonus runs out after 24 months? If this, deal is dead cold

Some are saying the 7GB expires after 1 year.

Sounds like virgin might come out with a clone of the Koodo plan tomorrow.

Yes…. I called Koodo and it does not expire. Waiting till tomorrow to call TELUS to see if theirs does after 2 years… or not. Loyalty at TELUS told me earlier today that it will exactly March Rogers offering….

No dice then. They want to kill Freedom mobile and then after 2 years continue with ripoffs.

DO NO TRUST the big 3 and their flanker brands!

Koodo seems pretty solid. No part of it expires.

You are right, I’m just waiting for Freedom to finish rolling out the LTE in Ontario.

I was assured that the Data bonus does not expire, the price discount does.
If that’s not the case, probably will be the time I finally switch to Freedom mobile.

Everyone’s hearing different things. Only thing we know for sure is that it’s a 3GB plan with a 7GB bonus.

Bonuses usually expire. Always actually, or it would be a 10GB base plan.

I’m an existing customer of Virgin and just called them and they gave me the 10gb/$60 (indefinitely) through retention

Existing customers can get 10gb/$60 with no expiry of the 10gb and no price jump in the future, ultimately matching the bell and koodo offer. Let me know if I’m making sense.

@artikas:disqus hey buddy, I’m keeping tabs on this post. Just a question: No price jump in the future? Does that mean it will remain 60$ indefinitely? No expiry of the bonus data, but my question is : can the 60$/month could see an increase?

Hey Zach,
That’s right. If you are an existing virgin member you should be able to call them and they will switch you to the 10gb/$60. I confirmed with the lady that this plan does not expire and no price changes. She confirmed with me, not only that she even let me keep my 1gb of bonus data loyalty gave me a put a year ago so I essentially ended up with 11gb.comment image

Were they reluctant to honour the 10GB/$60 deal, and so you went to retention as a last resort, or was it a quick resolution?

It was a 5 min phone call. When the rep picked up I just told her “I’m calling about the 10gb/$60 offer.” She said let me check if you qualify, once she saw that I had brought my own device she made all the changes. Didn’t have to go through retention or anything.

Thanks for the reply. The hardest thing was to get through to customer services. They seemed ok to change to this plan me even though I’m an existing customer.

I’ve been with Virgin for a few years now, and all three phones in my house were on two year contracts which were scheduled to expire in the next 8 months. In order to get this new plan we had to pay off the balance remaining on our phones. This makes sense seeing as though it’s for bring your own device plan. So technically, we now own our devices.
Customer service was very helpful and there was no hassle. The hardest part was getting through, which is totally understandable.

Not sure to be honest. Its a bring your own phone plan so i would assume you may not qualify but you’re probably best off talking to a rep at a local virgin kiosk

Confirmed, as of this morning, Virgin’s plan is $60 and the 10GB will NOT expire after 24 months. This deal is better than Koodo and Fido’s. Best of luck to everyone 🙂

Koodo is offering the same deal, $60, 10GB. Doesn’t expire after 24 months.

True, although Koodo could be considered as a lower tier carrier than Virgin. They do Not offer Wifi Calling or Voice of LTE. And their network runs off Telus, which is great if you’re out West, but in Ontario, Bell has a stronger network.

Do you realize, Telus/ Koodo, share Bells towers in Ontario and Quebec?

rob

From what I’ve been told by looking into this exact same issue, is that Bell and Telus have totally separate networks. They will allow each others customers to roam on their networks in fringe ares only (places up north for instance). But if you’re in a major city, you will be either on Bell or Telus, not both.

Bell uses Telus towers in the west and Telus uses bell towers in the East. It’s that simple.

But does Koodo hock you up with discounts? and call you a member not a customer? 😉

It’s not THAT simple actually, what you forgot to mention is that in Ontario they use each other’s towers where they don’t have towers. E.g. in Northern Ontario, Telus will be on a Bell tower, but in Toronto Telus phone will be on Telus tower.

Telus has very few towers in Toronto, so they need to use bell towers. I can’t post links but if you look at current mobile tower maps, you’ll see very few Telus towers in TO.

Just called virgin mobile. You CAN get deal on a contract. As i still owe 800 for my LG. They are changing my plan to platinum 85$/mth for 10gb Nd unlimited calling and i dont have to buy out my contract. The kicker is I have a platinum loyalty program so for an extra $5 I can add two more gigs to my plan. so I now have 12 gigs of data and didn’t have to buy out my plan. So when my phone is paid and it will cost me 65$/mth for 12GB.

I don’t know why you all complain Virgin Mobile has always had amazing customer service probably the best in the industry.

Unfortunately it is unforeseen if the $60 for 10Gb will be available by the time you buy out your phone…. This was my situation too as yourself but at BELL, and have an iPhone.

Which is why I decided to “buy-out” my plan (buy my cell phone, remaining balance of $404) and lock-in the $60 for 10Gb deal which starts as of today.

They anyways can defer my pay-out amount into the next upcoming bills, and I can pay it down partially by making arrangements with “Billing department” for the pay-out portion.

Wrong! If your under contract with Virgin you will not get this offer I was told by a rep of Virgin! What is wrong? And why can’t I get this deal ? Unless I am not under contract with this phone company! Or pay full amt owing on said bill in order to get this one time ever!

Because this plan, does not charge for the cost of a phone. you need to have an unlocked phone to get it.

I was an existing Virgin customer and just tried to switch my plan to the $60/10gb plan and after speaking to a VERY unhelpful representative, I was told that it was only for NEW customers. I explained that other existing members were able to get the plan, but he insisted it was only for NEW members. I told him other providers were offering the same plan and that if they wouldn’t honour the plan I would switch providers. He said that he would start the process of terminating my membership. So bye Virgin and hello Rogers!

As of Dec 18,2017 @ 10 pm the deal is still there with Virgin. I got mine fixed after 2 hour wait. As per the rep, the deal is available till 12/19/2017 midnight.

I called on Saturday the 23rd / 2017 and Virgin said the deal was finished. Not being offered anymore. Deal was for 4 days only. A little upsetting considering that I get numerous
notifications as a so called member of Virgin Mobile , like discounts for Starbucks, movies, tickets etc. But did Virgin notify me that i could upgrade my plan. NO………..Thanks for looking after your current loyal customers. I had no idea this plan was being offered until i was reading the news on the weekend.
