Sales of the pricey new iPhone X are reportedly much lower than Apple expected, so the company has slashed production volumes for the coming months.
A new report from Nikkei Asian Review says Apple will cut its production target in half for the iPhone X for the three-month period beginning in January. The number will reportedly drop from 40 million units to 20 million.
“The U.S. tech giant notified suppliers that it had decided to cut the target for the period to around 20 million units, in light of slower-than-expected sales in the year-end holiday shopping season in key markets such as Europe, the U.S., and China,” reads the report, quoting anonymous sources within Apple’s supply chain.
According to the report, Apple has already notified suppliers that is has reduced its target to around 20 million units due to the slower-than-expected sales of the device during the holiday season 2017. The iOS 11 flagship phone particularly did not perform well in key markets such as China, Europe and the U.S., and some analysts are claiming that this could have been the effect of its very expensive price tag.
While Apple is said to be maintaining the level of production for the rest of its smartphone range, the production cuts for the iPhone X will have a significant impact on companies supplying components for the new phone, with the combined impact expected to run into billions of dollars.
The report comes just a day after well-placed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple would launch a new version of the iPhone later this year with a similar design to the X but with an LCD screen rather than an OLED display, which could help the company recover from “lower than expected” iPhone X sales.

This is weird to me as everyone I know that has an iPhone has upgraded to the X.
I think the the performance in China is the X factor here… pardon the pun.
LOL funny comment but also probably true. I live in Vancouver and most of the people I know have upgraded, myself included. And it’s a great phone too.
I guess at the end of the day, it’s still an extremely expensive device and I guess many people decided to hold off. The only reason I bought it is because I’m 30 and I’m never going to have children or own a home, so I figured I might as well have a nice phone.
I got it as well. It such a great device! I used a lot of Rogers dollars I had accumulated on my credit card to soften the wallet hit as I do have kids and a mortgage.
He. I upgraded and it’s a nice phone but not sure it’s really worth 1500 tax in. And I kinda miss Touch ID when using Apple Pay. Damn exchange rate. I think it’s worth 1k and maybe 1300 for a plus size X
I don’t miss Touch ID in the slightest. Face ID is far superior in every way.
Whoa, I don’t know about that. Did you ever use Touch ID 2? It’s way faster than Face ID.
I do agree that Face ID is generally better though. The unlock process feels more natural, and Apple Pay works very well once you get used to it.
I’ve used Touch ID 2 and I still find Face ID faster. When I view an email in lock screen and want to delete it I hit view, then delete and it’s gone. Before after hitting delete I would have to touch Touch ID. Just that one step is one of the ways how Face ID is faster. I also like other aspects like when my phone rings it’s loud and as soon as I look at the phone the volume is lowered. So many benefits!
With Face ID I don’t have to take off my gloves in the winter!
I’m not surprised, I know of only one person who has the X. I also make a point to try and spot them in public and rarely see it.
Go to Toronto and you’ll see them everywhere.

I went to a Mercedes event in December at the ex grounds. Tons of iPhone X’s everywhere. Heck even in Deerhurst I saw lots people using it. But hey, once agian you know everything of what everyone sees in their daily lives……
I think people who say they’re seeing the X everywhere are the same like minded people who see what they want to see and have a distorted view of reality and aren’t reasonable people.
Not that many saw it coming but…
