Samsung Reportedly Working on Foldable Clamshell Design Follow-Up to Galaxy Fold

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold phone is set to launch this month, however, there are new rumours suggesting the company might already be working on a second luxury foldable.

According to a new report from Bloomberg‘s Sohee Kim, Samsung’s next foldable device will feature a 6.7-inch inner display that will be capable of shrinking to a “compact-sized square” when folded. The device will also be a lot thinner than the Galaxy Fold and will carry a lower price tag.

A punch-hole camera will be also embedded in the device’s screen, while the rear will house two cameras, Bloomberg reported. It’s not clear whether the device will have the single screen or feature an additional display on the outside as well.

Two other important tidbits from the Bloomberg report include the claim that Samsung is collaborating with American designer Thom Browne on the device’s design, and that it is using Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) for the inner display, “which would measure in at only 3% the thickness of the glass conventionally used to protect smartphone displays.”



However, sources that spoke to Bloomberg said that while Samsung is actively developing the phone, it may never see the light of day if sales of the Galaxy Fold don’t take off. The irony is that the Galaxy Fold was code-named “Winner,” but so far it’s been anything but for the company.

A number of major smartphone makers, including Samsung and Huawei, are developing phones with foldable screens, but they’ve gotten off to a rocky start so far. Samsung had initially planned to release its much-anticipated Galaxy Fold in April, but it delayed the device’s launch after a number of reviewers experienced issues with the phone’s screen.
