Google announced the new Nest Wifi today at its Made by Google event, detailing the successor to the original 2016 Google Wifi. The Nest Wifi offers a new design and also acts as a smart speaker too, powered by Google Assistant.

Google says the new Nest Wifi offers up to two times the speed and up to 25% more coverage than before, with its expandable 802.11s mesh Wi-Fi setup. New Nest Wifi points can be scaled like its predecessor, while also be easily added to an existing Google Wifi network. Two Nest Wifi points can provide wireless coverage for a 3,800 square foot home, with all management via the Google Home mobile app.

While also a speaker, Nest Wifi can be added to a speaker group to offer music throughout your home. Google Assistant brings voice controls to pause Wi-Fi for specific people (like your kids) or also check network information like your Internet speed.

For smart home connectivity, Google says IEEE 802.15.4 Thread (2.4 GHz) functionality is coming soon, while Bluetooth Low Energy is available on the Nest Wifi point and coming soon to the Nest Wifi router. Both a router and point can each handle up to 100 connected devices, while supporting multiple simultaneous 4K video streams.

Google emphasizes Nest Wifi is made out of sustainable materials, with the router enclosure and point enclosure utilizing 40-45% post-consumer recycled plastic.

Nest Wifi will launch in eight global markets in 2019, available for pre-order in Canada at the following prices, available in colours Snow, Sand and Mist:

  • Single router: $229 CAD (up to 2200 square feet)
  • Single Point: $199 CAD (up to 1600 square feet)
  • Router + 1 Point: $349 CAD (up to 3800 square feet)
  • Router + 2 Points: $459 CAD (up to 5400 square feet)
