The fall release of macOS 11 Big Sur will introduce Netflix 4K HDR and Dolby Vision support in Apple’s Safari browser for the first time.

According to Ishan Agarwal (via 9to5Mac), he noted, “OMG! Netflix on macOS Big Sur’s Safari browser just gave me 4K Stream with Dolby Vision on MacBook Pro! Earlier it was just 1080p with Dolby Vision. This is amazing.”

There are caveats, as you’ll require a Mac released in 2018 or later to watch Netflix in 4K HDR with macOS Big Sur. You’ll also have to be subscribed to a Netflix Premium account for 4K HDR and Dolby Vision.

The following Macs can support HDR video according to Apple:

This fall’s software releases from Apple will see support for the VP9 codec on iOS 14 and tvOS 14, bringing 4K YouTube finally to these platforms.

Apple said at WWDC AirPlay 2 also gains support for 4K video streaming and with the big push for 4K, this means Safari 14 should soon support 4K as well.
