Google Announces Long-Term Partnership with Home Automation Provider ADT

Google has today announced a long-term strategic partnership with ADT, a leading U.S. security and home automation provider, pairing more than 20,000 ADT professionals together with Nest’s portfolio of helpful home devices.

As part of this multi-year partnership, Google will make a $450 million investment in ADT. The company’s network of thousands of professional technicians will be able to sell and install Google Assistant-powered devices like Nest Cameras and Nest Hub Max. Over time, Nest’s devices will become the cornerstone of ADT’s smart home offering.

ADT customers will also have access to Nest Aware, including intelligent alerts and event history recording for up to 30 days.

The goal is to give customers fewer false alarms, more ways to receive alarm events, and better detection of potential incidents inside and around the home. It will also provide people with more helpful notifications that make everyday life more convenient, like package detection.

Upon the closing of Google’s equity investment in ADT, Google will own approximately 6.6 percent of ADT’s outstanding aggregate common equity.

Last year, Telus acquired ADT Canada in a $700 million deal to expand its security and smart home services. It remains unknown whether Google’s partnership will have any affect on the acquisition.
