$50 Million Canadian CRT Class Action Starts Sending $20 Payments via e-Transfer

Update November 2022: More payments are now coming via cheque and Interac e-Transfer.

Back in November 2018, a $49.8 million Canadian CRT class action settlement was approved and 21 months later, the first settlement payments are now being sent out.

The class action was regarding price-fixing by numerous makers of cathode ray tube (CRT) products in Canada, involving companies such as Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba, Hitachi, LG and more.

Now, the first payments of $20 have started trickling out in the form of Interac e-Transfers. iPhone in Canada reader Brad let us know payments were being sent out to claimants and he did see his money deposited into his bank account.

“We are only able to issue payments to claimants who are receiving the minimum payment,” reads the email, under the first payments distribution protocol.

The class action says the Ontario Court “approved an interim distribution to approved class members who will receive the minimum $20 payment,” to be sent via e-transfer or cheque, starting August 21, 2020.

For those with claims over $20, a second distribution needs to be approved based on outstanding class member appeals, says the class action lawsuit. The hearing was previously adjourned due to COVID-19 but is set to be held on September 23, 2020.

The CRT class action first started way back in 2008 and a dozen years later claimants are starting to receive payments.
