Amazon Acquires Podcast Publisher Wondery

In a blog post published yesterday, Amazon Music announced that podcast publisher Wondery has signed an agreement to join the platform.

Wondery is a podcast production enterprise that has brought the world some of the best and most entertaining podcasts in recent history. The publisher’s impressive portfolio includes titles like Business Wars, Dr. DeathDirty John, and The Shrink Next Door.

It would appear that Amazon.com Inc. has emerged triumphant in a bidding war for the popular podcast producer that also involved Apple, Sony, and at least one other company.

While the blog post disclaims that the deal is not yet final, it is all but — pending customary closing conditions, Wondery will be acquired by Amazon.com Inc.

Fortunately for Wondery’s audience, nothing will change for listeners even after the deal closes, and they will still be able to access Wondery content through existing providers, with Amazon Music (and even Apple TV) simply adding to the list.

Amazon Music added podcasts to its catalogue back in September, and now hopes to grow its catalogue with Wondery content, bringing even more creators, hosts, and immersive experiences to its platform.

Amazon Music ultimately wants to become the “premiere destination for creators,” and thanks to changing consumer habits, that includes podcast creators.
