Telus and Ericsson announced on Wednesday both companies are moving quickly towards its goal of supporting commercial 5G applications.

The companies announced they successfully conducted the “first multi-vendor network slicing proof of concept in a lab environment based on 3GPP Release 16 and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Layer 3 NW Yang Model (L3NM).”

With 5G, carriers are able to offer higher speed and data throughput compared to 4G. 5G network slicing allows operators to create numerous virtual networks, to meet different needs of applications and use cases.

After this completion of its network slicing proof of concept, both Telus and Ericsson note they have “successfully tested the maturity of standards and readiness of commercial products to meet the needs of enterprises and industry verticals.”

“We are thrilled with the outcome – it shows that the network slicing technology is getting ready and we can take a leap forward in opening network services to serve large, untapped market opportunities,” said Ibrahim Gedeon, Chief Technology Officer, TELUS, in an issued statement.

“Network slicing represents a multi-billion dollar market opportunity for service providers like TELUS which when enabled, orchestrated and ultimately monetized propels them to the heart of the digital transformation of their enterprise customers,” added Peo Lehto, Head of Solution Area OSS, Ericsson.

The proof of concept achieved by Telus and Ericsson verified enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), massive machine-type-communications (mMTC) telco-technical uses cases, while future plans will target ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLCC). Completion of these three use cases will allow Telus to offer various 5G services to the enterprise.

With 5G and network slicing, Telus will be able to offer customized services to various sectors, expanding its business opportunities.
