Google Details Why Nest Doorbell is Unable to Record Continuously
Last week, Google debuted its new battery-powered Nest Doorbell with an option to be hardwired, and if you’re planning to get one, you need to know that the device does not support 24/7 continuous video recording, even when plugged in permanently.

According to a Google representative, the restriction isn’t arbitrary, it’s thermal. While wired in and potentially in direct sunlight or hot environments, the enclosure is not large enough for the heat generated, the rep explained (via Android Police).
The product listing for the new Nest Doorbell (battery) also makes this requirement clear:
“Whether you choose battery or wired installation, the Nest Doorbell (battery) cannot continuously record 24/7 video history. Google Nest offers other cameras and a wired-only doorbell that can record 24/7 video history with a Nest Aware Plus subscription.”
In order to get continuous video recording with your Nest Doorbell, Google says you will need to either buy the older wired model or pair it with a second Nest cam.
