Apple TV+ Acquires 4-Part Docuseries on NBA Legend Magic Johnson

According to Deadline, Apple has acquired the rights to a four-part docuseries based on NBA Legend Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson.

The series will bring Magic Johnson’s life on and off the basketball court to Apple TV+ subscribers across the globe, from his humble beginnings in Lansing, Michigan, to becoming a five-time NBA champion as part of the Los Angeles Lakers.

The project will also explore Johnson’s contributions to HIV awareness, and his journey from NBA All-Star to a community activist and successful entrepreneur.

News of the acquisition comes ahead of the 30^th anniversary of Johnson’s HIV diagnosis announcement on November 7, and right at the start of the NBA’s monumental 75th Anniversary Season.

The series will feature never-before-seen footage from Johnson’s games and interviews, along with figures from his inner circle and the worlds of business and politics.

The (as yet) untitled series is directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), with editor Dirk Westervelt (Ford v. Ferrari), and cinematographer Rachel Morrison (Black Panther). It is produced by XTR and New Slate Ventures, in association with H.Wood Media and Delirio Films.

Exactly when Apple’s newest acquisition will land on Apple TV+ currently remains unknown. In the meantime, Apple TV+ original docuseries The Line starts streaming November 19.
