Back in January, Netflix was ordered by communication regulators in Russia it would have to start streaming state-approved TV channels to its customers in the country, beginning in March 2022.
But given the situation in Ukraine at the moment, with Russia invading the country, Netflix says it now has no plans to comply.
On Monday, Netflix told Politico it would not be complying with the Russian law, ahead of its mandated implementation.
“Given the current situation, we have no plans to add these channels to our service,” said a Netflix spokesperson on Monday evening.
Netflix would have been forced to stream the likes of state-owned Channel One, entertainment-focused NTV, and the Russian Orthodox Church’s in-house channel Spas on its platform.
Russia’s Roskomnadzor, known as its Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media, has laws that apply to streaming services with over 100,000 users.
