Apple’s Next iPad Air 5 Will Use M1 Chip, Not A15 Claims Report
On the eve of Apple’s March event ‘Peek Performance’, we’ve seen some apparent leaks of a ‘Mac Studio’ and also claims of a new dark green iPhone 13 and purple colour for the next iPad Air.
Speaking of the iPad Air 5, it was rumoured to include the A15 chip, 5G networking and Centre Stage feature with FaceTime.
But now, 9to5mac is reporting the next fifth-generation iPad Air will now be powered by the M1 chip, and not A15.
“Based on information seen by 9to5Mac, iPad Air 5 (codenamed J408) will have the same M1 chip that Apple uses in the 2021 models of the iPad Pro and also in the first generation of Apple Silicon Macs, which includes the 24-inch iMac and 2020 MacBook Air,” reports Filipe Espósito.
With an apparent upgrade to M1, there is a 50% upgrade in speed. The existing iPad Air uses Apple’s A14 Bionic chip.
With a bump in the processor to desktop-level power, I would think a price increase might be coming, versus a bump to A15, if this is actually going to be the case.
Sources also tell 9to5Mac that the next iPad Air 5 will get 5G networking upgrades, matching the iPad Pro and iPad mini 6 from last year. The display resolution on iPad Air 5 will also stay the same as its predecessor.
Apple’s March 8 special event is set to start at 10am PDT/1pm EDT on Tuesday. Stay tuned here for all the coverage.
