Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick Reaches and Exceeds $1 Billion at Worldwide Box Office

Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick is this summer’s big blockbuster at the moment. The film has officially reached and exceeded the $1 billion milestone worldwide.

The long-awaited sequel to 1986’s Top Gun has become one of this year’s most successful films in theatres. According to Deadline, Top Gun: Maverick has crossed the $1 billion mark in only 31 days of its theatrical release. As of Sunday, June 26th, the film has brought in an estimated total of $1.006 billion worldwide. This grand sum includes its $521.7 million in domestic box office totals paired with its $484.7 million from the international box office.

As such, Top Gun: Maverick has become the first film to star Tom Cruise that has crossed that $1 billion threshold. Even across the many Mission: Impossible films, which by and large are blockbuster films that bring audiences into their seats, none have come close to reaching $1 billion. Though, Mission: Impossible – Fallout did make it the furthest with a worldwide box office of $791 million.

What makes this feat even more impressive is that the film was able to do this without having it available in Russia or China. Moreso, the film is a direct sequel to the 80s fuelled film. Yet, audiences both young and old seem to be flocking to the theatres to watch Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick sees Tom Cruise’s Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell return to the cockpit as he returns to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program. Maverick is tasked with training a group of skilled pilots in order to complete a dangerous mission. The film also stars Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin, Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, Jon Hamm as Adm Beau “Cyclone” Simpson, and Monica Barbaro as Lt. Natasha “Phoenix” Trace.

Joseph Kosinski, who has worked with Cruise before on Oblivion, serves as director on the project. The film is written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie.

Following its theatrical run, Top Gun: Maverick is expected to make its landing on Paramount+. However, given its theatrical success, there’s no telling when it will make that transition over to the streaming service.
