Google Acquires Cameyo to Enhance ChromeOS Legacy App Management

Google has announced the acquisition of Cameyo, a leader in virtual application delivery (VAD), to enhance the management and accessibility of legacy applications within the ChromeOS ecosystem.

Chrome OS legacy

According to a recent Forrester study commissioned by Google, 90% of IT professionals envision a future where applications are cloud-based, rather than desktop-based.

Additionally, 78% believe that businesses failing to adopt web-based applications will be at a competitive disadvantage. This shift underscores a fundamental change in business operations, emphasizing the importance of embracing web-based technology for improved security.

However, despite this shift, the study reveals that 50% of applications still rely on client-based systems.

ChromeOS has consistently prioritized providing an optimal experience for virtual applications. Recognizing the potential of VAD, Google partnered with Cameyo last year to integrate virtual application delivery into ChromeOS.

This integration introduced features such as local file system integration, delivery of virtual apps as progressive web apps (PWAs), and enhanced clipboard support.

The integration of Cameyo’s technology with ChromeOS offers several advantages for businesses:

  • Simplified Application Deployment: Virtualized applications can be easily deployed and accessed across the organization, regardless of device or location.
  • Enhanced Security: Both ChromeOS and Cameyo provide zero trust security, offering robust protection of data and systems from vulnerabilities.
  • Improved Productivity: Employees can quickly access necessary applications as PWAs directly from the ChromeOS shelf, avoiding compatibility issues and performance lags associated with traditional virtual desktops.
  • Reduced IT Costs: Streamlined application management and support processes, along with the elimination of infrastructure requirements, result in significant cost savings over time.

By merging ChromeOS with Cameyo’s VAD technology, Google is empowering businesses to modernize their IT infrastructure while preserving their investments in existing software.
