Google Sheets Gets Faster Calculations, Enhanced Features

Google announced last week significant updates aimed at improving productivity and functionality in Google Sheets, catering to both new users and seasoned experts.
“We’re making it easier and faster to format, calculate, and manage your data in Google Sheets, whether you’re just getting started or are already a Sheets expert,” stated Eric Birnbaum, Group Product Manager at Google Sheets.
One of the major updates includes doubling the calculation speed in Sheets on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers. This enhancement, built on previous improvements like smooth scrolling and expanded cell limits, brings quicker execution of formulas, pivot tables, and conditional formatting. It ensures swift responsiveness regardless of file size or complexity of calculations, thanks to advancements in web technology like WasmGC.
“We’ve partnered with the Google Chrome team on this performance initiative and have extended these improvements to Sheets on the Edge browser,” noted Birnbaum, hinting at future compatibility expansions for Safari and Firefox. These improvements aim to streamline user experiences and optimize data processing capabilities.
In addition to speed enhancements, Google is introducing new features to simplify data organization and management in Sheets. The new side panel in Gemini for Workspace allows users to interact with Gemini for contextual insights and automatic spreadsheet summaries based on emails and documents.
“We’ve also introduced pre-built tables, eliminating the need to start from scratch for tasks like project management or inventory tracking,” added Birnbaum. These tables come with pre-configured designs, including column types, filters, and dropdown menus, ensuring data consistency and reducing manual formatting efforts.
Further innovations include enhanced data formatting with tables that automatically align inputs and apply appropriate formatting based on column types. This feature aims to streamline tasks for recruiters, marketers, and sales teams by minimizing manual adjustments.
To improve project management capabilities, Google Sheets now supports conditional notifications, enabling users to set rules that trigger email alerts based on specific spreadsheet criteria changes. This feature is part of Google’s broader efforts to introduce automation tools in Sheets, facilitating real-time collaboration and decision-making.
“From streamlining campaign planning to real-time collaboration, Sheets empowers teams across industries to boost productivity and drive strategic decisions,” emphasized Birnbaum.
