Rogers Completes 5G Cloud RAN Trial at Blue Jays Game

Rogers says it has successfully conducted Canada’s first commercial trial of Ericsson’s 5G Cloud-Radio Access Network (Cloud RAN) technology at a nearly sold-out Toronto Blue Jays game on Canada Day.

This technology builds on Rogers’ standalone 5G core network launched in 2021.

“Cloud-native technology is a critical component in the next generation of wireless networks and we are proud to have completed Canada’s first deployment of 5G Cloud RAN technology at a major live event,” said Ron McKenzie, Chief Technology and Information Officer, Rogers, in a statement. “We continue to invest in our coast-to-coast radio access network, including innovative Cloud-native technologies, to deliver the most reliable, consistent network services across the country for both consumers and enterprise customers.”

5G Cloud RAN, simply put, leverages cloud computing to manage 5G signals more efficiently, allowing for more capacity, faster speeds and reliability, especially in busy and dense places—such as a baseball game. With 5G RAN, smaller cell units are leveraged that can be controlled from the cloud, versus a massive big cell tower. This allows the network to react faster to demand, while also using less energy, since the cloud can control these smaller units in real time.

Rogers says its 5G network now covers over 2,300 communities. This trial follows earlier tests of 5G network slicing technology with Ericsson this year, marking significant steps in 5G innovation for Canada.
