WhatsApp Developing New Personalized AI Avatar Generator Feature

WhatsApp is reported to be developing a new generative AI feature, enabling users to create their own personalized avatars to display.
According to WABetaInfo, the new AI-focused feature has seemingly been spotted within the new WhatsApp Beta for Android 2.24.14.7. A shared screenshot shows the beginning stage of the process of creating your AI avatar. This includes taking a photo of yourself and leveraging text prompts. All of this is supposedly powered by Meta’s AI Llama model.

As seen in the screenshot provided by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp will ask users to provide a photo of themselves to use in the creation of the AI avatar. It’s worth noting that the app will ask the user to “take photos of yourself once.” Afterwards, the app will use Meta AI to generate a series of images that look like the user. The text prompt “Imagine me…” with some descriptors can then be used afterwards to better refine the produced images. Examples given are imagining yourself in a forest or space. You can also use the feature in other chats by typing “@Meta AI imagine me…”
It’s said that this feature is entirely optional and users will be required to opt in before having access to it. Users may have to go as far as enabling it within their settings before taking their setup photo. It’s also reported that users can delete their reference photos at any time by navigating to the Meta AI settings.
As of the time of writing, there’s no word on when this AI generator feature will be available to users. The company is still taking its time to roll out Meta AI’s chatbot. Therefore, it may take some time before global markets gain access to the avatar feature.
