iPhone 16 Leak Reveals Features, iPhone ‘Air’ in 2025 and More: Report
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has once again spilled the beans on Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 lineup and more, as detailed in his weekly PowerOn newsletter.
For starters, don’t expect any big changes this year for the iPhone 16 lineup. Apple again is milking the upgrade cycle with minimal upgrades. Gurman says 2025 will be a bigger year for major iPhone changes, specifically the debut of a thinner “Air” version, which will sit between an entry and Pro version, but just be super thin.
Again, in order to utilize Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18, you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, or a Mac or iPad running M1 or newer. Everyone else–sorry, but you’ve been dropped. Apple Intelligence requires 8GB of RAM and older iPhones don’t have this to run the new AI features, which aren’t game-changers just yet.
Personally, I think an iPhone with longer battery life would be much more appreciated, than a thinner iPhone. Anyways, here’s a quick recap of Gurman’s iPhone 16 lineup changes below, and more:
iPhone 16 Lineup Design and Model Names
- Minimal Design Changes: The iPhone 16 lineup will see the same design as previous iPhone 15 lineup models
- Model Names: The four models are likely to be again called iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max.
New iPhone 16 Lineup Features
- Action Button on Non-Pro Models: The Action button, previously exclusive to Pro models, will now be included in the non-Pro versions of the iPhone 16.
- iOS 18 Updates: Apple is bringing a more customizable Control Center and changeable Lock Screen options, possibly reducing the importance of the Action button.
- New Camera Control on Pro Models: The Pro models will feature a DSLR-like camera control button on the right side, allowing users to autofocus with a light press and take photos with a harder press. The button also allows swipe gestures to zoom in and out.
iPhone 16 Size and Colour Updates
- Size Increase for Pro Models: The iPhone 16 Pro Display will increase from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches, while the Pro Max will grow from 6.7 inches to nearly 6.9 inches. Hope your hands can handle the larger size.
- Colour Refresh for Pro Models: The Pro models will see a colour refresh again, including the replacement of the blue colour and the return of the popular rose gold.
iPhone 16 Hardware Upgrades
- New A18 Chip: All four iPhone 16 models will feature the new A18 chip.
- Increased RAM: Each model will come with 8 gigabytes of memory, the minimum required for Apple Intelligence.
Future iPhone Releases
- New iPhone SE in 2025: Apple plans to finally release a new iPhone SE in early 2025, resembling an iPhone 14 with a full OLED display and Apple Intelligence.
- “Air” Version iPhone: Apple is rumoured to be working on a thinner “Air” version of the iPhone, intended to sit between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro in terms of design.
- Foldable Devices: Apple is speculated to be developing both a foldable iPhone and a foldable iPad, with the iPad possibly being prioritized.
Apple still doesn’t have a foldable iPhone yet, but this looks to be coming at some point in time, rumoured for 2026.
