Rogers Appoints Edward Rogers as Executive Chair of the Board

The Board of Directors at Rogers appointed Edward Rogers as Executive Chair on Wednesday. Edward is the son of the company’s late founder, Ted Rogers.

“This appointment simply recognizes the role Edward is performing at the company,” said Robert J. Gemmell, Lead Director. He added that the company’s strong position is due to the leadership of CEO Tony Staffieri and the stewardship of Edward Rogers.

Edward Rogers will continue to lead the Board as Executive Chair, working with both the Board and the CEO to shape the company’s long-term growth strategy. Tony Staffieri’s duties as CEO will remain unchanged.

“The past 10 quarters of industry-leading growth have demonstrated the strength of Tony’s leadership,” said Edward Rogers. “I look forward to continuing to support the long-term success of Rogers.”

The appointment was was confirmed during a Board meeting in Calgary.

Back in 2021, three years after Edward Rogers became chair, Rogers announced it would buy Shaw for $26 billion. The deal raised concerns among regulators about reduced competition in the industry, but eventually the acquisition was completed in April 2023.

During this time, a power struggle erupted within the Rogers family that went public, that seemingly resembled the TV drama Succession. Edward Rogers wanted to replace CEO Joe Natale with Tony Staffieri, who was the CFO at the time. His attempt was opposed by his mother and sister.

The family dispute spilled over into the company’s board when Edward Rogers tried to replace board members with his own picks. The company challenged the move in court, but a B.C. court sided with Edward. Staffieri became CEO in January 2022, while the family dispute was settled earlier this year, after Edward’s sisters retired from the board.

This is so insulting and infuriating to read.
