Apple ID to be Renamed ‘Apple Account’ Next Month as part of iOS 18 Launch

Apple has revealed its plans to change the name of Apple ID to ‘Apple Account’ next month. The change is said to help align the company’s branding upon the launch of iOS 18.

In the latest Newsroom press release, Apple announces that Apple Accounts will be the de facto branding name for user accounts moving forward. Starting next month, Apple Accounts will be the sign-in experience across all devices and services under Apple’s umbrella.

“With the releases of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11, Apple ID is renamed to Apple Account for a consistent sign-in experience across Apple services and devices, and relies on a user’s existing credentials,” the press release reads.

Thankfully, for users, this is just a rebranding of the sign-in experience. From the sounds of it, there should be no immediate changes that will impact how you sign into your Apple device or service. On top of that, your Apple Account will work with your current login credentials.

Apple ID has been used since the early 2000s. While it is difficult to nail down the exact date, Apple IDs have been used during the advent of iTunes. An Apple ID equivalent was also required back in the early 2000s when creating a Mac email account.

Over the decades, Apple ID has been the free login for everything regarding Apple. It’s been an essential authenticator when logging into iCloud, ensuring that data, photos, and contacts are stored securely for users.
