Apple Gives More Default App Options, App Deletion for EU Users

Apple has announced major changes coming to iOS and iPadOS for users in the European Union by the end of 2024.

These updates are part of Apple’s efforts to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) and will affect the browser choice screen, default app settings, and app deletion options.

Developers of browsers featured on the EU’s browser choice screen will now have the chance to present extra info about their browsers to users. They will also gain access to enhanced data on the choice screen’s performance. The updated choice screen will be displayed to all EU users who have Safari as their default browser.

In addition to the browser updates, iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will introduce a new “Default Apps” section within the Settings menu. This section will display the default apps available to each user.

Future updates will also expand default settings options to include dialing phone numbers, sending messages, translating text, navigation, password management, keyboards, and call spam filters. Say good-bye to default Apple settings options, y’all.

Another major change is that several pre-installed Apple apps, including the App Store, Messages, Photos, Camera, and Safari, will now be deletable for EU users. This way, users can choose third-party apps of their choice instead of using Apple’s default apps. Really though, Apple should expand more of these settings to users outside of the EU as well, don’t you think?

Allowing an unverified app can have serious consequences, such as the risk of installing software that contains hidden malware. This malware can compromise your device’s security, steal personal information, and even cause system malfunctions
