Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup coming out in 2025 is already generating buzz with speculation about significant upgrades, particularly for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
According to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the flagship model in the 2025 lineup will be the only one to receive a 12GB RAM upgrade, while the other models in the series will continue with 8GB of RAM (via MacRumors).
This information surfaces shortly after a leak on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo suggested that all iPhone 17 models might feature 12GB of RAM. However, Kuo’s latest prediction contradicts this, asserting that the 12GB RAM enhancement will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
This decision would set the Pro Max apart from the smaller iPhone 17 Pro, the base iPhone 17, and the newly introduced iPhone 17 “Slim,” all of which are expected to stick with 8GB of RAM—the same capacity rumored for the entire iPhone 16 lineup set to launch this year.
The upcoming iPhone SE, the fourth generation expected to debut in early 2025, is also anticipated to feature 8GB of RAM.
The significance of RAM in Apple’s devices has increased recently, especially with the upcoming iOS 18. Apple has determined that 8GB of RAM is the minimum requirement to support the new Apple Intelligence features, which will only be available on devices meeting this threshold.
Consequently, only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models from the current lineup will be compatible with these advanced capabilities, as they both feature 8GB of RAM. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, which are equipped with just 6GB of RAM, will not support these features.
The move to standardize 8GB of RAM across all models starting with the iPhone 16 lineup ensures that all new iPhones will be compatible with Apple Intelligence going forward.
However, the 12GB RAM upgrade in the iPhone 17 Pro Max could unlock even more powerful AI-driven capabilities, further setting the Pro Max apart from its siblings.

I think I'll stick with my 13 pro max for another year. this year update seems to be very weak and the real upgrade seems to point out to the 17 pro max next year.
Will see september 9 but I don't have high expectations.
