Telus and Bell Get $8.5 Million to Boost Cell Service in 2 Provinces

The CRTC says it is taking steps to improve cellphone service along nearly 100 kilometres of major roads in Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and Ontario.

The Commission will provide $17 million to Bell, TBayTel, Telus, and Sogetel Mobilité to build new cell towers and boost cellphone coverage along eight major roads. Bell and Telus will get over $8.5 million combined.

Below is a breakdown of funding and where this money will go to improve cell service:

  • Bell: Approved for up to $1,048,999 to build a cell tower covering 15 km of Route 330 near Gander Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • TBayTel: Approved for up to $5,156,270 to upgrade five cellular sites covering 39 km of Highway 527 in northwestern Ontario.
  • Telus: Approved for up to $7,479,321 to build cellular towers covering 27 km of highways in Quebec.
  • Sogetel Mobilité: Approved for up to $3,594,659 to build cellular towers covering 15 km along Routes 161 and 212 in southeastern Quebec.

“High-quality communications services are essential to every aspect of our daily lives. Through its Broadband Fund, the CRTC is continuing to help connect Canadians in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities to high-speed Internet and cellphone service. The projects announced today will help make it safer for Canadians to travel along eight major roads by improving connectivity,” said Vicky Eatrides, Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer, CRTC, in a statement on Wednesday.

The funding comes from the CRTC’s Broadband Fund, to help connect rural, remote, and Indigenous communities across Canada. To date, the fund has improved high-speed internet and cellphone service in over 250 communities, says the CRTC.

I went from Fido to Public Mobile, so same network to same network effectively. 97% of the time I don't notice a an effective difference, but I do agree, the Rogers network is better in Montreal. It particularly worked better in various buildings where my signal can suck on Public Mobile (Telus) 5G.

Flushing taxpayer money to these public corps just so they can gouge the same taxpayers with high prices and predatory fees.

While the same public corps are still able to issue dividends.

I’m convinced the majority of the funds CRTC gives to companies are money laundered to the CEO and shareholders. The funds aren’t used for improvements, just to pad the profits of Big Telecom.
