Check Out All the New Emojis Coming in Unicode 16.0

The Unicode Consortium has officially released its much-anticipated version 16.0 of the Unicode Standard today, featuring a bunch of new emojis (via Emojipedia).

New Emoji 16

Version 16.0 introduces eight new emojis that will gradually roll out across various devices throughout 2024 and into 2025. Users can expect to see these new characters added to their emoji keyboards in the coming months.

The new emojis include:

  • Face with Bags Under Eyes
  • Fingerprint
  • Splatter
  • Root Vegetable
  • Leafless Tree
  • Harp
  • Shovel
  • Flag: Sark

All of these new emojis, except for the Flag: Sark, are included within both Unicode 16.0 and Emoji 16.0, ensuring widespread adoption on platforms like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, all of which are voting members of the Unicode Consortium.

Emoji 16

In total, Unicode 16.0 now includes 5,185 new characters, with seven new standalone emoji code points making their debut. This brings the total number of characters in the Unicode Standard to a staggering 154,998.

With each new release of the Unicode Standard, the digital world becomes richer in the variety of symbols and characters available to users. Emojis, in particular, have become a core part of digital communication, transcending language barriers and offering users a creative way to express emotions and ideas.

The latest additions, such as the Face with Bags Under Eyes and Splatter, reflect the ongoing effort to capture the nuances of modern communication through symbolic representation.

I was just thinking this exact thing. How many years ago did the consortium announce they weren’t going to be flags anymore?

today I learned what “Sark” is. Not even a country. Low bar.

Can't Apple knock a few bucks off the price of these new phones that are getting out of reach instead of these ridiculous emojis?
Anyone else thinking its time Timmy takes his retirement?

This is Unicode Consortium, not Apple. Tim doesn’t have anything to do with that. I doubt he has a say in what new emojis will be coming to the next iOS, unless he decides to intentionally exclude some.

Fair comment, the angle I was pursing is Cook is on top of the food chain here and I would think has the final say on how much the budget would be and for what improvements or features the new product would have.
