Snap Unveils New AR Glasses, Snapchat App Features
Snap held its 6th annual Snap Partner Summit, where key leaders shared new developments for the company’s community of users, creators, developers, partners, and advertisers.
New Spectacles and Snap OS Launch
Snap introduced its fifth-gen Spectacles, advanced AR glasses powered by the newly developed Snap OS. The glasses feature see-through displays and allow users to experience augmented reality Lenses in real-time.
Snap OS is designed to enhance natural interaction using hand and voice navigation, with vivid images produced by proprietary micro-projectors and waveguides. The glasses are equipped with a dual Snapdragon processor system, and offer up to 45 minutes of continuous runtime.
Snap is also partnering with OpenAI to offer developers access to multimodal large language models for building Lenses that can recognize and provide context for real-world objects.
Updates to Snapchat and New AI Features
The Snapchat app is now used by over 850 million people worldwide. The app is testing a simplified version designed to streamline communication, photo-taking, and entertainment.
New AI features include an AI Lens for seeing “elderly selves,” creative AI captions for Memories for Snapchat+ subscribers, and My AI enhancements that can interpret signs, translate menus, and identify plants. New Bitmoji fashion accessories, including Snap-yellow Crocs and handbags from Prada and Miu Miu, were also announced.
Advancements in AR Development
Snap revealed new tools and stats for its AR platform, noting that over 375,000 AR creators have built more than 4 million Lenses, with over 4.5 trillion engagements in the past year.
Lens Studio, Snap’s AR development platform, has been rebuilt to support more advanced experiences, including new features like Easy Lens, which allows for creating Lenses through a chat interface using large language models. Additional GenAI Suite features were announced, such as Animation Blending and Body Morph, aimed at making AR creation faster and more accessible for developers.
