Telus Launches SmartEnergy to Cut Energy Bills, Costs $12/Month
Telus has launched SmartEnergy, a new subscription service designed to help users cut energy costs and reduce their environmental footprint.
By connecting compatible smart home devices, such as thermostats and plugs, to the Telus SmartHome+ app, customers can automate temperature settings, power down unused devices, and create routines that could reduce energy bills by up to 15 percent, depending on their province, home type, and heating source.
Back in February, Telus was seeking beta testers for its SmartHome+ app.
“With SmartEnergy, our goal is to empower Canadians with the best technology, devices and information they need to lower their energy bills and minimize their environmental footprint,” said Dwayne Benefield, Chief Product Officer at Telus, in an issued statement to iPhone in Canada.
The app offers daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly insights into home energy usage, along with tips for maximizing savings. It also allows participation in energy-saving events during peak demand, automatically adjusting thermostats and powering down devices. Customers earn Telus Rewards for their participation.
SmartEnergy is available nationwide, but Quebec support is expected “in the near future”. The service is not free however, as it will cost $12 per month, but new subscribers can get a smart thermostat and two smart plugs for $25 (if you sign on for 24 months). Telus says this is worth $250 in savings.

Pay 12$ a month to save 12$
I mean… that’s a really good thing, but ya why go do all that and hope it breaks even.
It provides more value to our hydro companies in this case than the consumers, so maybe they should be paying for it.
Telus Home is an absolute waste of money. You're far better off purchasing individual smart components, installing, and monitoring yourself. Almost anyone can do it.
Why would anyone need to pay someone tellis to monitor energy usage? This is free everywhere else. It's like every scheme they cook up preys on boomers and the ill-informed. There's absolutely no innovation – just nickel and diming for fluff.
