How to Transfer Data: Old iPhone to New iPhone [Tutorial]

how to transfer data new iphone

If you’ve just received your brank spankin’ new iPhone 16 series today, here’s how to transfer your old iPhone data to your new iPhone.

Apple has a new video tutorial out today detailing how to transfer your data and set up your new iPhone. The methods are super easy and makes for one of the best features from Apple—being able to seamlessly transition to a new device (which makes sense because they want you to always upgrade).

To transfer data from your old iPhone or iPad to a new one, start by ensuring you have a backup of your previous device and have your Apple ID (err, Apple Account) and password ready. If you subscribe to iCloud backup, this happens automatically every night when your phone is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi.

Also, make sure to transfer your SIM card or eSIM, and if your new device needs a different SIM card, contact your carrier such as Rogers, Telus, Bell or Freedom Mobile for help.

You can set up your new device by using one of the following methods: Quick Start, which automatically sets up your new device using your old one; iCloud, where you transfer data from an iCloud backup; or use the Apple Devices app, iTunes, or Finder to restore from a backup on your computer.

Personally we like to restore from an iCloud backup, but Quick Start is also super easy as well as it doesn’t require an iCloud backup, or a Mac or PC. You just put the old iPhone beside the new iPhone and a prompt will appear.

Nevertheless, it’s always best to transfer to your new iPhone when you’re not in a rush to go anywhere, as the process can sometimes take a while, depending how much data needs to be moved over or restored.

Does anyone know which transfer method keeps you signed in without having to re-log into dozens of apps?

You can try putting the two phones beside each other and have all the data and app transferred to the new phone, instead of using iCloud. It's much quicker. I can't remember if I have to re-login more or less since I don't update phone that often.

Does Apple let us do direct transfer from phone to phone at the Apple Store if we plan to trade in? It’s such a better method than restoring from Backup or iCloud, sometimes hours later if it’s a busy day.

They don’t say if it’s best to move your physical sim from the old to the new phone before or after doing the transfer.

I leave the physical sim in old phone when I did the switch over because Apple would send notification to another Apple device to ask if the process should continue.
