Meta unveiled the new Meta Quest 3S headset at its Connect event, offering the same mixed reality capabilities and fast performance as the Meta Quest 3, but at a lower price point.

The Quest 3S, priced from $399.99 in Canada (128GB), is designed for users new to mixed reality or those seeking a budget-friendly upgrade from earlier models like the Quest and Quest 2. A 256GB option is available at $549.99 CAD. Pre-orders for the Quest 3S are now live in Canada and will officially launch on October 15 in stores.

Quest 3S has a lower display resolution at 1832 x 1920 with 773 ppi, versus 2064 x 2208 and 1218 ppi for the Quest 3. The Quest 3S has refresh rates of 90Hz and 120Hz, while the Quest 3 has 72Hz and 80Hz on top.

The Quest 3 has a wider field of view, offering 110 degrees horizontally and 96 degrees vertically, compared to the Meta Quest 3S, which provides 96 degrees horizontally and 90 degrees vertically.

In terms of optics, the Quest 3 uses more advanced pancake lenses with continuous IAD adjustment, while the Quest 3S features Fresnel lenses with a 3-position IAD adjustment. Both headsets support 100% of the sRGB colour gamut.

Battery life of the Quest 3S is at 2.5 hours run time with its 4324 mAh battery, versus 2.2 hours on the Quest 3 and its 5060 mAh battery.

The 3S joins the Meta Quest 3 family, which debuted last year as a consumer-friendly mixed-reality device. Like its predecessor, the Quest 3S features a full-color Passthrough and supports a wide range of 2D apps, including YouTube and Facebook. The device also benefits from updates such as improved spatial audio, better contrast for Passthrough, and a new Travel Mode.

Meta also announced a price drop for the 512GB Meta Quest 3 in Canada (joining the US), reducing the most expensive 512GB option from $849.99 CAD to $679.99 CAD, confirmed the company to iPhone in Canada. That works out to a 20% discount. This headset is geared for tech enthusiasts and gamers, and features a 4K+ Infinite Display with advanced pancake lenses and a wider field of view.

The Quest 3S is compatible with Meta’s library of apps and games, including new exclusives bundled, like Batman: Arkham Shadow.

Would love to see comparisons, on price at least, with the Quest 2 when it first came out and after the Quest 3 came out and the price of the Quest 2 was reduced. One of the best things about the Quest 2 was that its price made it quite easy to get into. That’s the reason I got into it. Had it been more expensive, I probably wouldn’t have been able to justify the price for the Quest 2. With the 3S, I’m wondering if the price of these devices is still in the same range or if it is creeping up. The lower the price for the entry-level model, the more people get into VR and the more attention it will receive from Meta and from Apple who will each push each other to advance this tech. Perhaps the writer could add that comparison to the article.
