ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode Now Live in Canada

OpenAI has announced the rollout of its new Advanced Voice feature for ChatGPT, now available to paid Plus and Team users through the mobile app on iOS and Android. This feature blows Apple’s Siri out of the water and there’s no way we can ever see the latter catching up at this point.

The headline feature, which uses GPT-4’s native audio capabilities, allows for more natural and real-time conversations, picking up on non-verbal cues like speech speed and responding with emotion. It also offers improved conversational speed, smoothness, and accents in select foreign languages. It feels like the movie Her, when talking to ChatGPT in Advanced Voice mode.

Advanced Voice is now rolling out in Canada, we can confirm. You may need to update the ChatGPT app, then log out and log back in if you’re not seeing it. We can confirm it is live on the ChatGPT apps for iOS and macOS. You know you have Advanced Voice if you see the blue orb below. Standard voice shows a black orb.

Users can choose from nine distinct voices, including Arbor, Breeze, Cove, and Sol, each with unique tones and character. The update includes five new voices and enhanced accents, as well as the ability to customize instructions for Advanced Voice interactions. Here’s how OpenAI describes each voice:

• Ember – Confident and optimistic
• Juniper – Open and upbeat
• Maple – Cheerful and candid
• Sol – Savvy and relaxed

Also, you can keep a conversation going in the background in both standard and advanced voice by toggling “Background Conversations” on within settings.

Advanced Voice is not yet available in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein.

However, it is currently rolling out to iOS and Android users with app version 1.2024.261 or later. Daily usage limits are in place for Advanced Voice, and users will be notified as they approach their limit (they will let you know when 15 minutes are remaining), after which the feature will switch to standard voice. Despite this launch of the impressive Advanced Voice mode, OpenAI’s leadership is going through some major changes. The company’s CTO Mira Murati has departed, along with its chief research officer and research VP. OpenAI started as a non-profit but now apparently plans to restructure its business into a for-profit corporation, with CEO Sam Altman said to be receiving equity in the company for the first time. OpenAI’s valuation is estimated to be about $150 billion US.
