OpenAI Delays ChatGPT Voice Mode Release

OpenAI has shared an update on the highly anticipated ChatGPT Voice Mode, which was demonstrated during the company’s Spring Update.

Initially planned for an alpha release to a select group of ChatGPT Plus users in late June, the rollout has been delayed by one month to further improve quality control.

“We had planned to start rolling this out in alpha to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users in late June, but need one more month to reach our bar to launch,” OpenAI stated on Tuesday. “For example, we’re improving the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content. We’re also working on improving the user experience and preparing our infrastructure to scale to millions while maintaining real-time responses.”

The alpha release will begin with a small group of users to gather feedback and make small improvements before expanding access. OpenAI says it is aiming for all ChatGPT Plus users to have access by the fall.

“As part of our iterative deployment strategy, we’ll start the alpha with a small group of users to gather feedback and expand based on what we learn,” OpenAI noted. “Exact timelines depend on meeting our high safety and reliability bar.”

In addition to Voice Mode, OpenAI is working on new video and screen sharing capabilities, which were shown separately. “We are also working on rolling out the new video and screen sharing capabilities we demoed separately, and will keep you posted on that timeline,” OpenAI added.

ChatGPT’s advanced Voice Mode is designed to understand and respond with emotions and non-verbal cues, moving closer to real-time, natural conversations with AI. OpenAI emphasized, “Our mission is to bring these new experiences to you thoughtfully.”

We saw some pretty insane demos of Voice Mode from a while back. OpenAI’s original demos had a voice named “Sky” that sounded like Scarlett Johansson, but were later removed. Johansson’s voice played the female AI character in the 2013 sci-fi film ‘Her’, where Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with his AI companion.

At this point, we may have surpassed Skynet with AI. It will be interesting to see where generative AI will go even just one year from now.

Toys R Us has released a new brand film teaser, made using OpenAI’s Sora video maker. The following was created just from text prompts. Can you even tell this was generated solely with AI? The toy company says the video, “depicts a young Charles Lazarus, founder of Toys”R”Us and creator of Geoffrey the Giraffe, dreaming of a magical place that will change toy stores forever.”

Yesterday, OpenAI released its ChatGPT Mac app for everyone to download, not just Plus users.
