Most Canadians Reject Trudeau’s New Gas and Diesel Vehicle Ban: Poll

A new poll released by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) shows that 59% of Canadians are against the federal government’s plan to ban the sale of new gas and diesel vehicles by 2035 (the original date was 2040).
The Leger survey found that only 29% support the ban, while 12% remain undecided.
“The results of the poll are clear: Canadians don’t want the government to ban new gas and diesel vehicles,” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director, in a statement. “Canadians want the option to buy new gas-powered minivans and diesel work trucks and taxpayers know this ban will cost us a fortune.”
The federal government’s proposed ban is part of its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote the use of electric vehicles. However, Terrazzano argues that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s plan could lead to increased taxes and utility costs to fund infrastructure such as charging stations and new power plants.
“Canadians have every reason to worry their tax and power bills will increase to pay for all the subsidies, charging stations, power plants and transmission lines required for Trudeau’s ban,” said Terrazzano.
“Trudeau should listen to Canadians, take this poll as a wake-up call and scrap his ban on new gas and diesel vehicles,” he added. Among respondents who had made up their minds on the issue, 67% opposed the ban.
Chinese EV automakers have some affordable cars, far cheaper than North American counterparts. This ban means less choice for consumers, and is a move made to follow in footsteps with the USA, who enacted a similar ban.
Now, the recent decision by the feds to impose a 106% tariff on Chinese-made EVs, will affect automakers including the likes of Tesla, Volvo, Polestar and Ford, including Lincoln. Any vehicle, whether all-electric or hybrid made in China will face tariffs so automakers need to shift production outside of the nation.
The federal government currently offers a $5,000 iZEV rebate on eligible electric and hybrid vehicles.

Explain how this fits, even loosely, within the guidelines of what this site is supposed to be focused on:
You are correct. This site has become right wing talking points and RedFlagDeals reposts. Really gone downhill lately.
I miss when people could actually use their brains and think logically. This is why we are where we are today.
Wow, a website dedicated to mobile devices talking about evs because, wait for it, they are now pieces of technology on wheels that connect to the internet.
We get it, you're not that smart
Apple CarPlay is in many vehicles today, that is how this is relevant, loosely, yes, but relevant.
How many articles on this website cover Tesla and EV related news? Why is this? Oh right, because they're just fancy ipads on wheels.
Of course most Canadians don't support this nonsense. Most Canadians can barely afford food much less these overpriced pieces of technology on wheels that collect countless amounts of data. If you don't let them they become mostly $65,000 paperweights.
Electric vehicles weigh 25-30% more than the same gasoline vehicle, which means you will go through tires WAY faster. There is nothing environmentally friendly about this, especially when you consider the Lithium-Mining required in order to achieve a 10-year battery.
Gasoline & Diesel needs to be always an option until a better battery format is discovered.
Ya. And there already are better formats but the government just added a 106% tariff on the companies that are developing them…
So here we are.

The roads won't last as long either. The weight of the vehicles ruins current roads quicker. Also, there isn't enough electricity for us to all drive EVs. This is a clusterf…..
Darn rights. Winnipeg’s dilapidated road and highway infrastructure is going to get 25-30% more weight on them in the next 5-10 years, can you imagine the consequences of this short term, let alone long term? Good grief.
I love all the downvotes I get for suggesting gasoline & diesel should be an option until a better battery format is discovered. Absolutely ridiculous.
Canadian Taxpayers Federation news releases are the original click bait, fit only for the laziest of journalists and news sites. Be embarrassed you published this.
I would absolutely agree to the ban if the government gives me huge credit to buy a new electric vehicle 🤞🤞🤞🤞
you mean the tax payers
Without guidance on how many Canadian took part in poll, how they were chosen and the wording of the questionnaire, there's little to suggest a 'majority of Canadians' have an opinion to report on.
CTF also known to have views that are sympathetic to a particular range of 'taxpayers', while – as noted below – I'm not sure how this even vaguely fits into this blog's mandate.
This was an online poll by Leger.
I don't trust online polls because a number of Canadians don't use the internet, or don't respond to polls.
A more legitimate poll would have been a telephone survey of a cross-section of Canadians, but then that would cost more and might not give the Taxpayers Federation the results they wanted.
Any Canadian that supports this must live in a location that doesn't hit -30 plus in the winter months and has a nice fancy garage to store their EV. Much less the absurd asking price, 30 minute charge time, lack of charging infrastructure through the country. Closest fast charger to me is an hour away. They can go pound sand.
