OpenAI Raises $6.6 Billion in Funding, Valuation at $157 Billion
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has announced it has secured $6.6 billion in new funding, bringing its post-money valuation to a staggering $157 billion.
“We are making progress on our mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity,” OpenAI said in a statement, noting that over 250 million people globally use ChatGPT every week to enhance their work, creativity, and learning.
The funding round was led by Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital, with participation from major investors including Microsoft, Nvidia, SoftBank, Khosla Ventures, Altimeter Capital, Fidelity, Tiger Global, and MGX, according to Axios. Apple, which was rumoured to invest, did not take part in the funding round.
Apple will be integrating ChatGPT into iOS, iPadOS and macOS, on top of Apple Intelligence.
This latest investment round surpasses the $6 billion raised earlier this year by Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI.
“We aim to make advanced intelligence a widely accessible resource. We’re grateful to our investors for their trust in us, and we look forward to working with our partners, developers, and the broader community to shape an AI-powered ecosystem and future that benefits everyone,” said OpenAI in a blog post on Wednesday.
It’s going to be scary to see what advances AI can do in the next couple of years. Hold onto the seat of your pants, everyone. Our AI overlords are coming soon as promised by Miles Dyson.
