In a recently published YouTube video, the folks over at tech channel PhoneBuff pit Apple’s new iPhone 16 Pro Max against the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in their signature PhoneBuff-style battery test.
This year’s iPhone 16 lineup boasts significant battery life improvements, which PhoneBuff sought to put to the test. The iPhone 16 Pro Max features a 4,685 mAh battery, up from the 4,441 mAh pack on last year’s flagship model. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S24 Ultra sports a massive 5,000 mAh battery.
Going by battery comparisons with previous generations, the iPhone 16 lineup delivers on earlier reports of longer battery life. This is especially true for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which packs both a larger battery and a more efficient A18 Pro chip under the hood.
PhoneBuff‘s battery test aims to be a standardized comparison of battery life under simulated real-world conditions. The curated evaluation includes calling, text messaging, browsing the internet, scrolling through apps like Instagram, a 16-hour standby period, playing back YouTube videos, gaming, using the camera, cycling through different apps, and more.
For fair testing conditions, PhoneBuff tested fresh, straight-out-of-the-box devices with brand-new batteries. Furthermore, screen brightness was calibrated to precisely 200 nits on both devices.
At the end of the test, which lasted well over 24 hours, the Galaxy S24 Ultra ran out of battery and shut down at the 27-hour-and-18-minute mark. At the same time, the iPhone 16 Pro Max still had 7% in the bank.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max managed to last 28 hours and 14 minutes in total. Apple’s latest flagship set a new record for the app cycling section of PhoneBuff‘s battery test, beating everything from the previous record holder, the OnePlus 12, to the Galaxy S24 Ultra and its own predecessor, last year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max. PhoneBuff crowned the iPhone 16 Pro Max the new “champion” of its curated battery test.
