Apple’s Magic Mouse Gets USB-C, But Hated Design Flaw Remains

Apple today introduced a new M4 iMac, with more upgrades to come this week.

Today also saw its Apple Magic accessories get USB-C support, ditching the legacy Lightning connector.

For the Magic Mouse, it also gets USB-C but the most ridiculous charging port location remains, still at the bottom of the mouse. This still means when your mouse battery dies, you need to awkwardly charge it from the bottom while the mouse rests on its side.

Magic Mouse with its Lightning port (just imagine this as USB-C; Apple hasn’t updated its website)

This second-generation Magic Mouse debuted in 2015 with the Lightning charging port on the bottom. How did Jony Ive let this design pass? Even moving it to the rear of the mouse would be fine. But at the bottom? Nearly 10 years later, this “design flaw” still remains. We’re surprised Apple hasn’t added Qi2 wireless charging to the Magic Mouse yet.

The Magic Mouse and its flat design will hurt the wrists of those with large hands. Apple says the rechargeable battery still lasts “about a month or more between charges.” You do get a woven USB-C charging cable though, and the standalone price is $119 in Canada.
