Android 16 Developer Preview 1 Now Available to Download

Google has officially launched the first developer preview of Android 16, marking the beginning of a new development cycle for its flagship operating system.

Aimed at developers and tech enthusiasts, this preview introduces the next wave of Android innovations and lays the groundwork for significant updates set to debut in 2025.

The Android 16 developer preview is the first step in a series of releases leading up to the operating system’s full launch next year. By moving the major release forward by one quarter, Android aims to ensure that more devices receive updates sooner, enhancing user experiences across the ecosystem.

In addition to the Q2 major release, Google plans a minor release in Q4 2025. While this later update will introduce new developer APIs, it won’t include significant app-impacting behavior changes.

To foster continuous improvement, Google will maintain its quarterly Android update schedule. These include the Q1 and Q3 releases, which focus on incremental enhancements to ensure consistent quality throughout the Android ecosystem.

To prepare for Android 16, developers are encouraged to:

• Compile and Test: Update apps to target the new SDK, run compatibility tests in CI environments, and report any issues.
• Install and Explore: Load the app onto devices or emulators running Android 16 and perform extensive testing.

Google has emphasized the importance of early feedback, noting that the sooner developers provide input, the more likely it is that their suggestions will influence the final version of Android 16.

The Android 16 Developer Preview 1 is available for manual download, offering an opportunity for developers to experiment with the new SDK and system images.

Google plans to provide over-the-air updates for all subsequent preview builds after the initial manual installation. However, developers currently enrolled in the Android 15 QPR2 Beta program should note that transitioning to the Android 16 preview will require a device wipe.
