X iOS App Now Lets Users Customize Swipe Gestures

X, formerly known as Twitter, has rolled out a new update for its iOS app, introudcing customizable swipe gestures and an option to hide engagement buttons.

The standout feature in this update is the ability to enable swipe gestures for actions like liking and replying to posts. Users can activate these gestures in the app’s “Timeline” settings.

This functionality allows for quicker interactions, letting users define what each swipe direction achieves—whether bookmarking, replying, or performing no action at all. This customization offers flexibility and caters to individual preferences, making interactions more intuitive and streamlined.

Another major addition is the option to hide engagement metrics, such as likes and replies, directly beneath posts. This feature appeals to users who prefer a cleaner interface without the distraction of numerical metrics.

While X had previously hinted at removing these buttons entirely, the new approach gives users the choice, a move likely to encourage gradual adoption of a streamlined interface.

X engineer May Ly shared the following video showing how to enable side-swiping like and reply options, by activating such in their app settings.

This update is currently exclusive to iOS, with no announcements yet about availability on Android. Users can access these features by updating their app and navigating to the settings to enable the new options.
