iOS to Outpace Android Growth by 2025, Says IDC Report
The global smartphone market is projected to grow 6.2% in 2024, recovering from years of decline, according to IDC. This rebound, driven by pent-up demand for upgrades, will see shipments reach 1.24 billion units.

While Android devices are set to dominate growth in emerging markets with a 7.6% surge, Apple’s iOS will experience modest gains of just 0.4% next year, notes the report.
Apple continues to see record-breaking performance in markets like India, but challenges persist in key regions such as the United States, Europe, and China, where increasing competition and market saturation hinder significant expansion.
Despite these hurdles, the company’s outlook improves in 2025, with iOS expected to grow 3.1%, outpacing Android’s forecasted 1.7% increase.
The company’s focus on innovation, including leveraging generative AI (GenAI) technology, may prove pivotal in the coming years. Currently limited to premium devices, GenAI features are anticipated to move into lower price tiers by 2028, potentially reaching 70% of the smartphone market.
Apple’s integration of AI into its ecosystem could spark a new wave of consumer interest, driving a long-awaited “supercycle” of upgrades.

Foldable phones, another area of innovation, remain a niche category, with global shipments expected to grow by 10.5% in 2024. However, durability concerns and limited use cases temper their adoption.
Looking ahead, Apple’s ability to expand in key markets while enhancing its ecosystem with cutting-edge technology will determine its continued success amid intensifying competition.
