AirTags should never be used to track your pet as it uses Bluetooth not GPS. It relies on nearby Apple devices to send its location via Bluetooth. If there are no Apple devices close by, the AirTag can't communicate its location. If your pet was home, sure, but if your pet got loose, there is no guarantee the pet would stay within the range of an iPhone.
