OpenAI Releases Sora: Create AI Videos from Text Prompts

sora hero launch

OpenAI has announced the release of Sora, its AI tool designed to help users create and enhance videos using AI. The company said today the release of Sora was its “holiday gift to you”, available at sora.com.

With Sora, users can generate videos from text, animate images, and remix or blend existing videos. The website interface allows prompting, creative control, and sharing within a community. OpenAI previewed Sora back in February.

Sora Turbo, a faster version of the model previewed earlier this year, is now available as a standalone product for Plus and Pro users.

The AI video tool will let users create up to 1080p resolution clips at up to 20 seconds long, in formats such as widescreen, vertical or square aspect ratios. Get ready for the web to be flooded with realistic videos that you won’t be able to tell that are AI. It’s time to doubt even more of what you see online.

Sora is free with paid Plus accounts. You can create up to 50 videos at 480p resolution or fewer videos at 720p each month.

The Pro plan includes 10x more usage, higher resolutions, and longer durations, but of course you’ll need to pay for it. OpenAI says it is working on “tailored pricing for different types of users”, coming in early 2025.

Right now, heavy traffic has temporarily disabled sign-ups for Sora. Users attempting to access the service are seeing a message indicating that OpenAI is working to restore sign-ups soon.

I guess the day of uploading a video, and describe what the final version will look like is coming soon.

“Sora is free with paid Plus accounts.”

So, not free.
