Apple Working on Smart Doorbell with Face ID, Says Report
Apple is reportedly working on a smart doorbell that could recognize faces and unlock doors automatically, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The advanced device would use facial recognition technology, similar to Face ID on iPhones, to scan a homeowner’s face and wirelessly connect to a deadbolt smart lock.
The system is expected to work with existing smart locks compatible with Apple’s HomeKit, though Apple may also team up with a specific lock manufacturer to offer a complete package at launch.
Gurman says the project is still in its early stages, and the doorbell likely won’t hit the market until the end of next year at the earliest. When it does, it could feature Apple’s upcoming Proxima wireless chip and its secure enclave technology, designed to keep user data safe.
Smart doorbells have been dominated by Google’s Nest and Amazon’s Blink and Ring. It will be interesting to see what Apple will come up with, and also how much they will want to charge customers.
In other tidbits, Gurman says Apple is working on adding heart rate tracking to the next-gen AirPods Pro. This is in testing and is not as accurate as Apple Watch. Apple also still has now ramped up its plan to put cameras into AirPods for AI.
