Study Uncovers Harmful ‘Forever Chemicals’ in Smartwatch Bands

Recent research has uncovered that smartwatch wristbands made from fluoroelastomers, may contain significant levels of harmful substances referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment and human body.

A study published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters analyzed 22 smartwatch bands across different brands and price ranges, and found significant levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in them, which have been associated with cancer, high blood pressure, and infertility.

The findings indicated that 15 of these bands contained total fluorine concentrations exceeding 1%, suggesting the widespread use of fluoroelastomers in these products. Notably, perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) was the most frequently detected compound, with concentrations ranging from below the limit of detection to as high as 16,662 nanograms per gram.

PFHxA is a member of the PFAS family, a group of synthetic chemicals renowned for their resistance to degradation. This durability has led to their extensive use in various consumer products, including non-stick cookware, water-resistant fabrics, and certain cosmetics.

The study’s lead author, Graham F. Peaslee, a physicist at the University of Notre Dame, expressed concern over the high concentrations of PFHxA found in the watchbands. He noted that while the dermal absorption rate of PFHxA is not fully understood, the presence of such high levels in products designed for prolonged skin contact is alarming.

The study also highlighted that more expensive wristbands, particularly those priced over $30, tended to have higher concentrations of PFHxA.

Consumers concerned about potential exposure to PFAS from smartwatch bands can take proactive measures. Opting for wristbands made from alternative materials, such as silicone, which are less likely to contain PFAS, is one recommended approach.

Additionally, being aware of product specifications and avoiding items labeled as containing fluoroelastomers can help reduce the risk of exposure.

Well, you pay higher price for a supposedly higher quality “premium” product and you get more toxic compounds. It makes sense. You paid more , you should get more.
