Apple News Eyes Further Expansion, Now Reaching 125M Monthly Users

Apple News is used by 125 million people monthly in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia, and may soon expand to more countries, according to insiders.

The iPhone maker is also considering strengthening its local news coverage in the UK and adding its puzzles section, which is currently only available in the US and Canada, reports The Financial Times.

Apple News has become the top news app in most of the countries where it operates. Its audience differs from typical readers of most publishers, based on the company’s internal research.

The platform relies on about 100 editors based in London, New York, Sydney, and California. The team, led by editor-in-chief Lauren Kern, curates and promotes stories using a mix of human judgment and automation.

While insiders say the platform doesn’t favour specific publishers, major outlets like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal in the US and The Guardian and The Telegraph in the UK often appear at the top. The Financial Times isn’t available on Apple News.

For Canadian outlets, Global News, the Toronto Star, CBC News, the Financial Post, and the Globe and Mail and the National Post frequently show up.

Editors focus on journalistic quality, prioritizing stories that are exclusive, well-researched, and unbiased. Apple News also values diverse perspectives, aiming to showcase a range of voices rather than balancing political leanings. This is unlike Google News or even X, where news is generated with algorithms.

The app’s editorial team analyzes data to assess how stories perform, ensuring readers get engaging and relevant content. Breaking news and significant events tend to dominate the top stories chosen by the editors.
