Nintendo Comments on Recent Switch 2 Images and Renders, Stating They “Are Not Official”

Nintendo has finally commented on the overwhelming number of leaks of its unannounced ‘Switch 2’. As images, videos, and 3D renders surfaced across the internet, Nintendo confirmed the obvious by stating they are “not official.”

As reported by Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun, Nintendo has made a comment regarding the deluge of Switch 2 leaks. In the translated text, Nintendo emphasizes that “the images and videos are not official.” The company’s comments shouldn’t come as any surprise because it is quite on the nose. Everything we’ve seen from the Nintendo Switch over the past month or so has been from third-party partners, peripheral partners, etc.

This past week, images and videos of the supposed Nintendo Switch successor began flooding, partially due to CES 2025. Accessory company Genki brought a supposed 3D-printed mockup of what’s believed to be the Switch 2 to the showroom floor. Journalists could see it in person, hold it, and compare it to other devices such as the Steam Deck OLED. The accessory company also told The Verge that the mounting channel of the new Joy-Cons includes an optical sensor, that while paired with another attachment could offer some sort of mouse-like use.

Additionally, OnLeaks and 91Mobiles released a video this week highlighting a 3D render of the supposed device, showing off some of the console’s features, including its 3.5mm headphone jack, game card slot, and a USB-C port, which the original Nintendo Switch lacks. The renders also show off a larger screen, the new Joy-Con controllers, and the tweaked button layout. With a larger design and real estate, a new ‘Home’ button on the right Joy-Con now appears to be featured. New buttons near the ZL and ZR triggers on the Joy-Cons are also featured.

The release of Switch 2 is still very much up in the air. According to those attending CES 2025, a Genki representative has alluded to a release date of April 2025. However, nothing official from Nintendo has been said.

All the company has officially stated regarding the successor to the Nintendo Switch is that it will feature backwards compatibility with Switch games. We’re also due for an official reveal prior to March 31, 2025. Last year, Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo, confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be announced “within this fiscal year.”
