Instagram Reels Get New Features Amid Potential U.S. TikTok Ban
Just as the U.S. prepares to enforce a ban on TikTok, Instagram has unveiled a significant update to its Reels platform, introducing new features aimed at enhancing user engagement, as noted by TechCrunch.

The timing of Instagram’s update suggests Meta is positioning itself as a primary alternative for displaced TikTok creators and users.
Many creators who depend on social media for their livelihood are in search of new platforms to sustain their audience and revenue. While some TikTok users have shifted to RedNote—a popular Chinese platform—its limited appeal among U.S. businesses poses monetization challenges.
Meta’s announcement appears to capitalize on this opportunity, emphasizing features that simplify discovering, interacting with, and sharing Reels content. By prioritizing social engagement, Instagram aims to attract both creators and their followers.
The update focuses on streamlining user interactions and promoting discussions around Reels content. A new feature located at the top-right corner of the Reels tab enables users to view posts their friends and followers have liked or commented on. This button features small profile pictures along with icons that indicate whether the interaction involved a “like” or a “comment.”
Additionally, a “reply bar” at the bottom of reels encourages users to engage with their friends’ reactions. For example, if a user’s profile picture and heart icon appear floating on the screen, the reply bar prompts you to respond. Replies are sent as direct messages to mutual followers.

These features are now rolling out in the U.S. market and could appeal to creators looking to replace TikTok’s collaborative and interaction-driven environment.
