Meta’s New Video Editing App is a CapCut Rival

Meta on Sunday announced a new video editing app, named Edits, as CapCut — and the rest of TikTok-owner ByteDance’s apps — stare down the barrel of a ban in the U.S (via TechCrunch).

Apple removed CapCut from its U.S. App Store ahead of ByteDance’s January 19 shutdown deadline. CapCut (and its siblings, TikTok included) narrowly survived the shutdown scare but has yet to be reinstated to the App Store, leaving a power vacuum in the mobile video editing category.

Edits is meant to fill the void. The Meta-made app is set to launch on iOS next month, with an Android version coming later.

“Today we’re announcing a new app called ‘Edits,’ for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone,” Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said in a post on Threads. “There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators.”

Mosseri stressed in a follow-up post that Edits will be “more for creators than casual video makers.” He explained that the app will feature a high-quality camera and a suite of creative tools, complete with a dedicated tab for inspiration and another for brainstorming and keeping track of ideas.

Users will also be able to share drafts of the videos they create with friends or collaborators. In addition, Edits will offer detailed insights into how videos made using the app perform on Instagram once they are published. According to Mosseri, Meta is already collaborating with certain creators to get their thoughts on the app.

Meta has proved keen on taking advantage of gaps in the market. Back in 2023, the social media giant was quick to launch its text-based conversation app, Threads, as public opinion and usage of then-Twitter, now-X soured. Meta recently also added new features to Instagram Reels, its TikTok rival, as the Chinese app’s future in the U.S. hangs by a thread.
