TV Has Surpassed Mobile for YouTube Viewership, Says CEO
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has announced that television screens have surpassed mobile devices as the primary medium for YouTube consumption in the United States (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Mohan highlighted that YouTube’s content on TV is diverse and interactive, encompassing Shorts, podcasts, and live streams, alongside traditional programming like sports, sitcoms, and talk shows. This blend offers viewers a comprehensive entertainment experience that distinguishes YouTube from conventional television.
Recent updates to YouTube’s TV app have enhanced user engagement. The platform now allows users to view comments and descriptions alongside videos, facilitating real-time interaction.
Features like “seasons” enable easier navigation through video series, and the “Watch With” function allows creators to provide live commentary during events, enriching the viewing experience. Beyond traditional content, YouTube has also become a central hub for cultural events.
Notably, during the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, over 45 million Americans turned to YouTube for election-related content on election day. High-profile interviews, such as Joe Rogan’s discussion with President Trump, garnered significant viewership, reinforcing YouTube’s role in shaping public discourse.
The platform’s influence extends globally, with creators reaching audiences far beyond their home countries. For instance, French creator Sarah Lezito saw over 95% of her watch time come from international viewers in 2024. Similarly, the Australian animated series “The Amazing Digital Circus” by GLITCH became a worldwide sensation, appearing in YouTube’s annual End of Year list across eight countries.

Looking ahead, YouTube is investing in artificial intelligence to support creators. The platform is developing AI tools to assist with content creation, such as generating video ideas, titles, and thumbnails.
Additionally, YouTube is expanding its auto-dubbing feature, enabling creators to translate their videos into multiple languages, thereby reaching a broader audience.

Life is too short to watch YT using their apps…99% ads vs 1% content. Get an alternate app on your android TV or better, an android TV box with a modded app.
