Alibaba’s AI to Power Apple Intelligence on iPhones in China
Apple has announced a strategic partnership with Alibaba Group to integrate advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features into iPhones sold in China, Bloomberg is reporting.

Alibaba’s Chairman, Joe Tsai, confirmed the partnership during an interview at the World Government Summit in Dubai. He stated,
“Apple has been very selective. They talked to a number of companies in China, and in the end, they choose to do business with us. They want to use our AI to power their phones,” Tsai said. The move comes as Apple faces declining iPhone sales in China, attributed to stiff competition from local brands like Huawei and Xiaomi.
The partnership with Alibaba is expected to address regulatory challenges that have previously limited Apple’s AI offerings in China. Due to local regulations, Apple has been unable to provide its full suite of AI features in the country without partnering with a locally accredited company.
For Alibaba, this collaboration signifies a significant endorsement of its AI technology. The company’s recent advancements, including the release of its Qwen 2.5 model, have positioned it as a leader in the domestic AI market.
The integration of Alibaba’s AI into iPhones is anticipated to bring features such as enhanced Siri capabilities, advanced text generation, and improved photo editing tools to Chinese users. These enhancements aim to provide a more personalized and efficient user experience, aligning with the growing demand for AI-driven functionalities in smartphones.
Following the announcement of the partnership, Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares surged by 9.2%, reaching a three-year high.

For Alibaba, the partnership not only validates its AI capabilities but also opens avenues for further collaborations in the technology sector. However, the implementation of AI features on iPhones will still require regulatory approval in China.
Apple and Alibaba have already submitted the necessary documentation, but the approval process may take several months. During this period, both companies will need to navigate the complexities of China’s regulatory environment to ensure a smooth rollout of the new features.
