Apple Kills M2 and M3 MacBook Air–and $1299 Entry Price

With today’s launch of the new M4 MacBook Air, Apple has simplified its lineup as it no longer offers older versions of the laptop.
Previously, the M3 MacBook Air started at $1449, while the M2 MacBook Air was available for $1299. Today’s M4 MacBook Air launch debuted pre-orders from $1399, which is $50 cheaper than before. But also gone is the $1299 M2 MacBook Air which also was part of the free upgrade to 16GB RAM.
Back in October, the free RAM upgrade from 8GB to 16GB was to ensure the M2 and M3 MacBook Air models would run Apple Intelligence smoothly. Apple called the upgrade “a terrific value for the world’s best-selling laptop.”
The bottom line is the starting price for a new MacBook Air is $1399, which is $50 less than before, but the $1299 option for an older (and still capable) version is gone. Apple could have kept the $1299 price point for the M3, but it didn’t.
