BC Hydro Removes Tesla Products from EV Rebate Program

BC Hydro and the B.C. government have officially removed Tesla products from the province’s Electric Vehicle (EV) rebate program, as part of an effort to prioritize Canadian-made goods over products from the United States, amid the ongoing tariff war.

As of March 12, 2025, Tesla’s electric vehicle chargers, energy storage batteries, and inverters are no longer eligible for rebates under the CleanBC and BC Hydro rebate programs. However, if you purchased a Tesla product or received pre-approval before this date, your rebate will still be processed.

This move is part of the government’s broader strategy to support local manufacturers and reduce reliance on U.S.-produced goods. The website has a highlighted section that reads, “Tesla products are not eligible.”

Previously, Tesla was showing in the manufacturer drop down menu, after TechnoVE and ahead of Ultra EVSE.

One of the popular Tesla products affected is the Wall Connector—a home EV charger that retails for $580 CAD. Without the rebate, Tesla owners will now need to cover the full cost of installing this charger in their homes. The rebate amount for EV chargers is up to 50% of the cost, to a max of $350.

BC Hydro has stated that this change is aimed at aligning rebate programs with the province’s goals of supporting Canadian products wherever possible. BC liquor stores have also removed U.S. liquor off shelves as well from states that have Republican governors.

The tariff wars are getting ugly. Canada previously imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese-made EVs. China has retaliated to slap a 100% tariff on rapeseed oil and 25% tariff on pork and aquatic products. No word yet when people will be banning and removing everyone made in China off store shelves though.

It's just temporary.

There is a difference though; US initiated the tariff war with Canada and Canada retaliated, while China wasn’t the one who started it with Canada but is responding to 100% tariff to their EVs, imposed by Canada in order to suck up to US who demanded it from Canada (while we were still good friends /s).

So @John Quintet, it is not very likely that people here will start removing all Chinese product from the shelves; at least not unless China escalates without provocation. With friends like the current US administration, who needs enemies?

This is a very accurate answer. Canada was the one who initiated tariffs on Chinese made EVs. China is merely responding, as one would have expected them to. Maybe the author of this article should reconsider his sarcasm and check is pro-Elon bias at the door, if he calls himself a “journalist”. True journalists are supposed to present the news in an unbiased manner. That includes the omission of throwaway comments at the end of a piece of news. If Mr. Quintet wants to make sarcastic remarks that belie his opinion that the state of affairs is unfair to Tesla, then this piece should be clearly labeled as “opinion”. As it is not, the writers sarcasm is not appreciated by readers who come here for unbiased news. This site has become increasingly politicized and it’s really quite disappointing.
